How To Become A Police Officer In Virginia

Becoming a police officer is no easy feat. It takes time and dedication to complete such rigorous training. When a person decides to become a police officer, not only is he/she giving their time and effort in keeping the community safe but also he/she is allowing to hand of their life in the service of protecting the people from crimes and any problems that might arise. Difficult trainings are mandatory in order to better equip their officers to handle difficult challenges in their jobs. In the state of Virginia is no exception. The state takes pride in having well trained officers that is able to handle crimes and troubles in the place they are assigned to protect.

Steps to become a police officer in the state of Virginia
Step 1:
The person is required to pass the necessary requirements and qualifications that the state deemed necessary before the applicant can move forward with the next step

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be a permanent resident of the state
  • Not less than 21 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have a valid driver’s license have good driving record
  • Has a proportion height and weight
  • Is willing to relocate in different areas of the state where police officers are needed
  • Is willing to work in rotating shifts
  • Must be physically fit

  • Have good vision and pass the color vision test

Step 2:
Enroll in a police academy that is approved by the state police department which they require before applying for a job. The applicant is required to complete the certification with 40 hours in the course program.

Step 3:
The applicant must undergo a series of pre-employment test that the applicant must all pass.
