How To Become A Police Officer In Tennessee

In the state of Tennessee, the people have no such problem and they implicitly trust their police officers and the people know that they will be safe in their neighborhood and in their own homes. Police officers have always been given the task to serve the people. The police officers are chosen with a set of values that must be present in them. They must have integrity, honesty, loyalty, respectful and others that is ideal to be an officer for the people.

Requirements and steps needed to become a police officer in Tennessee

  • Must pass the minimum requirements required by the law enforcement agency of Tennessee:
    • Must have a valid driver’s license in Tennessee
    • Must be at least 21 years old
    • Must be a citizen of United States
    • Provide a criminal record disclosure to allow access and release on the applicant’s records
    • A fingerprint will be taken
    • Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED)
    • Must have good vision and hearing ability
  • Pass a physical agility test to know of the applicant’s ability and flexibility which is divided into different parts:
    • 1.5 mile run
    • 300 meters run
    • Vertical leap
    • Sit-ups
    • Push-ups
  • A medical and psychological exam is conducted by an approved licensed health practitioner that must be passed in order to perform the task of a police officer
  • A thorough background investigation will be conducted to figure out if the applicants have prior criminal/felony records or other discriminating records
  • Attend military style training for 18 weeks at the Tennessee police academy
  • Must be qualified and willing to carry weapons
  • On the first day of the academy, the applicant will be required to provide a certified copy of birth certificate and official social security card
  • You will then be given a duty assignment after graduating the 18 week training at the Tennessee police academy

[NOTE: If the applicant has served at the United States Armed Forces, you must provide 4 copies of a discharge that must be enclosed as an honorable discharge.]
