How To Become A Police Officer In Rhode Island

When you see police officers in every state that you visit in the United States, you immediately feel a sense of safety and peace. You immediately know that when there is a possibility of a problem or crime, you can count on them to come and help you in every way possible. Police officers are revered as the pillars of good and role models to all people young and old. Furthermore, they keep the streets safe and accident free as much as possible. In Rhode Island, they make it their mission to do just this and strive even more to become a force that provides a positive impact to the citizens of Rhode Island.

General Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old
  • A US citizen
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Does not need a Height requirement
  • Weight must be proportioned with the height
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a normal hearing ability
  • Have no tattoos that might show with the uniform
  • Must possess a normal or close to normal eyesight

Application Selection Process:

  • A written exam must be completed first and the results must be a passing grade before you can go further with the application. This not only measures the applicant’s writing skills and reading comprehensions but it also test the applicant’s interpersonal and cognitive skills.
  • A physical fitness test is then scheduled and conducted for the purpose of finding out the applicant’s physical strength and flexibility. This test is divided into five areas, and is as follows:
    • 1.5 mile run
    • 300 meter run
    • Vertical jump
    • Push-ups
    • Sit-ups
  • An Oral interview is scheduled after passing the first two exams and will be conducted by a panel
  • The applicant will then be subjected to a background investigation that will check if there are some prior records that the division must know
  • There will then be a psychological test as well as an interview by an approved licensed psychologist
  • A medical exam is conducted by a qualified physician who will determine if the applicant is physically well and qualified to do the job
  • The chosen applicant’s will then proceed to a training academy
