How To Become A Police Officer In Oklahoma

Becoming a police officer is not an easy task. There are a lot of exams to take and there are also trainings to comply before anyone can be considered to be a police officer. This is the way it is done because the police officers are not only responsible for the safety of every individual in the community but they are also responsible to keep the peace in the community. No one wants to hand over their well being to just about anyone. You must be qualified first and have traits like integrity, honesty, and compassion that can is very useful when you are a police officer. This holds true in Oklahoma where they follow strict guidelines that must be met by their applicants before being considered the position of police officer.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Has good moral conduct
  • US citizen
  • High school diploma holder or its equivalent
  • Must be 21-45 years old
  • Has a valid driver’s license
  • Is emotionally stable
  • Requirements of the State Police Pension Board is met

Application process:

  1. Physical Fitness Test
    • This test is required to evaluate the applicant’s strength and agility
    • You can retake the exam after 6 months have passed
  2. Academy Aptitude Test
    • This is to test the applicants with their reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills
    • You can retake the exam within a 12 month period
  3. Background Investigation Book
    • Will require the applicants to provide Photostat copies of certificates you have obtain like birth certificate, college transcript, high school diploma, marriage license and others
  4. Stability Rating
    • After completing the book, your information will then be evaluated by a coordinator who will rate you based on their assessment from the book
  5. Polygraph Examination
    • Conducted by a police examiner
  6. Background Investigation
    • This is to ascertain that the applicant has no criminal records prior to application
  7. Employment Assessment Board
    • You will then be assessed in you are qualified to be a police officer
  8. Final Selection
    • The Chief of Police will then select the applicants to proceed with the Police Academy Training
  9. Psychological Examination
    • Conducted by an approved psychologist
  10. Medical Examination
    • Conducted by an approved medical personnel
  11. Oklahoma City Police Department Academy
    • You will attend 28 week training at the Police Academy
  12. Field Training Program
    • You will be assigned to a field officer for 4-weeks then after completing that, you are then considered as a police officer in Oklahoma
