  • Must be 21 years old at the time of graduation
  • Possess a GED certification or High School Diploma
  • US Citizen
  • Excellent Physical Health condition (with 20/30 corrected vision or 20/100 uncorrected vision)
  • No mental disorder and psychologically fit to work
  • No Felony conviction or History of criminal activity
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s License
  • 30 credit hours from San Juan College

Steps on how to become a cop in New Mexico

First Step

  • Anyone who wishes to become a Police Officer in New Mexico must comply and meet with requirements stated above. Included in the requirements are the submission of application forms, physical fitness assessment, background investigation, psychological screening and drug testing

Second Step

  • After being selected from all the applicants, the candidate will now proceed to an oral interview consisting of departmental members discussing attributes and skills that makes them competitive and what they hold that is considered to be an edge compared to others and advantageous skills they possess.

Third Step

  • If the applicant passes the interview phase, he/she will attend the training academy. After completing the basic police officer training, the graduate can now take the written examination which they must score at least 70%. After successfully passing the exam they will get their certification and will be eligible for the field training program would would take at least 12 weeks to finish.
  • They will be assessed and evaluated on how their perform and respond in different crisis situation.

Fourth Step

  • Once they have completed and passed the evaluation process, they can now apply for any job vacancies as a police officer in New Mexico.
