How To Become A Police Officer In Minnesota

Police Officers have a code that they stand by and that is “to protect and serve.” This is true to all police officers and Minnesota is one of the states that take this code seriously. The state of Minnesota not only have a long standing law enforcement agency but they also take pride in their continued peace by the diligence, hard work and dedication by their police officers. That is why they always take careful consideration in hiring new recruits. The recruit must have the heart and dedication to do this difficult but fulfilling job as a police officer.

Procedure to becoming a police officer in Minnesota

  1. Complete a pre-service police education and training which usually last for 10 weeks
  2. The applicant will need to pass the Police Officer Licensing Examination
  3. The applicant will then need to pass the selection standard by the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board

Peace Officer Standards and Training selection process consists of

  1. Application
    • Done online at the Law Enforcement Training Opportunity (LETO) program
  2. Written examination
    • There will be two types of test to be done and the applicant will need to pass both tests
      1. Wonderlic W.P.T. Examination which measures the cognitive ability of the applicant and match it for the specific job
      2. Law Enforcement Work Styles assessment which test the response of the applicant if given a set of behavioral situations
  3. Physical fitness examination
    • The exam must be passed at least a scale of 50 out of 100 points and the exam consists of vertical jump, 1 minute sit-ups, push-ups, 1.5 mile run and the 300 meter run
  4. Oral interview
    • The interview is conducted by a three panelist that usually last for less than sixty minutes
  5. Background investigation
    • Done to check for any public and private information which includes criminal and civil court records
  6. Medical evaluation
    • To check for any possible diseases or disorder and the test includes testing for possible controlled substances
  7. Psychological examination
    • This is done to evaluate the applicant’s capacity and suitability for the job

Recruitments to become a police officer

  1. Age not below 21 years old
  2. Must be a US citizen
  3. In good physical condition
  4. No previous felony or criminal records
  5. Have a valid driver’s license in the state of Minnesota
  6. Have a high school diploma or GED
