How To Become A Police Officer in Illinois

Protecting the community from crimes and injustice is the main responsibility of a police officer. The state’s mission is to “promote public safety to improve the quality of life”. The goal of the state is to training aspiring police officers to safeguard the public by enforcing the law, reduce traffic accidents and death, and prevent unlawful acts.

Here are the steps to follow to become a police officer in Illinois

First Step

The candidates must meet the minimum qualifications to be considered for the second step of the process. The requirements are:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Citizen of the United States
  • With good moral character
  • Physically fit and no mental illness
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Has not been convicted to felony or misdemeanor
  • No cases related to substance abuse
  • Honorably discharged from any armed forces

Second Step

Prior in entering the academy candidates needs to pass the POWER (Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report). This serves as their initial physical and cognitive test to evaluate if they meet the standards of the workforce.

Make sure that the Training Academy accredited by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard Board.

  • 6 months – 1 year training course
  • Consists of lectures, physical training, procedural protocols, field exposures and firearm trainings

Third Step

After finishing the training program, the candidate can now apply to any agency to choice.

  • The agency will be responsible in administering a written and oral examination to test the knowledge and skills they have learned in the academy
  • Polygraph test to verify informations and files discovered by the agency
  • Medical exam with a licensed physician

Fourth Step

Get hired and become a member of the law enforcement team.
