A police officer is member of the law enforcement team who prevents crimes and protects the people in the community from any danger. Their main responsibility is to maintain public safety and order including implementing traffic rules. They have the authority to arrest and detain anyone who is caught violating the law.

Some chosen police officers are trained to immediately respond in emergency or crisis situation like acts of terrorism, protection of important state visitors and assist on investigations. Basically they make sure that the state’s law and regulations are being followed by the citizens and tourist.

Requirements to become a Police Officer in Hawaii

  • 21 years old
  • US citizen
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • High School graduate or GED or equivalent
  • Has not been convicted on cases such as
    • felony
    • misdemeanor
    • domestic violence
    • substance abuse

Applicants need to pass all the requirements and criteria to pass the screening stage.
This includes:

    • Must have a 20/20 vision without correction
    • 20/200 vision for those wearing soft contact lenses
    • 20/40 vision for those who wears binoculars

Once the candidate passes the screening stage, the Human Resource will schedule an interview with the applicant together with a representative in the Police Department to assess if the candidate has good communication skills and has the mental ability to perform the expected duties.

Training Academy

The aspiring police officer needs to attend classes and training in an accredited academy. To have the knowledge and skills needed to perform variety of law enforcement duties.

On the job training

Application of what has been learned in the academy. This also serves as their evaluation if they are competent for the job. If they performed well, they will be hired.
